Lesson 3

Authority of the Believer

The real power Jesus gave you — and how to actually walk in it

When Jesus sent out his disciples, he didn't hand them a new rule book or a theology curriculum. He gave them authority.

I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Luke 10:19

And here's what I want you to catch — this wasn't for a special class of super-Christians. These were ordinary people who had simply walked with Jesus. And the authority wasn't limited. It was authority over all the power of the enemy.

What authority actually means

Authority isn't the same thing as raw power. Think about it this way: a police officer doesn't need to be physically stronger than every criminal they face. They stand in a certain position, backed by the law. That's authority.

When a believer speaks in the name of Jesus, they're not relying on their own strength. They're exercising the delegated authority of the One who has already defeated death, hell, and the grave — the One to whom all authority in heaven and on earth has been given (Matthew 28:18).

Key Takeaway

Your authority isn't based on how holy you feel, how long you've been a Christian, or whether you have the right personality. It's based entirely on the name and finished work of Jesus Christ.

The armor God gave you

Paul describes spiritual authority in terms of a soldier's equipment — not to make it feel harsh or militaristic, but to show us we're prepared for whatever comes.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:10-12

The armor pieces are:

  • Belt of Truth — knowing and living in God's Word
  • Breastplate of Righteousness — living with integrity, protected by Christ's righteousness
  • Gospel of Peace — rootedness and stability in who you are
  • Shield of Faith — extinguishing the enemy's accusations and doubts
  • Helmet of Salvation — protecting your mind with the security of your identity
  • Sword of the Spirit — the Word of God, the only offensive weapon listed

Notice that the sword is the only offensive weapon. The Word of God — spoken in faith, applied with authority — is exactly how Jesus defeated every temptation in the wilderness. Not by feeling spiritual. By saying "It is written..."

The name of Jesus

The name of Jesus isn't a magic phrase. It's the rightful title of the King of Kings. When you pray and declare in his name, you're showing up as his representative, with his full backing.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

Philippians 2:9-10

Authority isn't passive

The disciples were told to use their authority. The armor is meant to be worn. The sword is meant to be drawn. Just sitting back and hoping the enemy gets bored and leaves isn't a strategy.

Key Takeaway

You are not a victim waiting to be rescued. You are a representative of a kingdom that has already won. You can start living like it.
